UAE. The UAE is joining forces with the Vienna-based International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to devise guidelines for radioactive waste
management in the oil & gas industries.
Director General of the Federal Environment Agency (FEA) Dr Salim Al
Dhahiri said: ''The UAE is cooperation with the IAEA to chalk out a
long-term strategy for disposal and management of radioactive waste and
standards for radioactive waste disposal facilities.
He added that the FEA is hosting IAEA radioactive waste management
expert Dr Terje Strand who has already been on a five-day visit to the
country for talks with officials at the FEA and other competent
authorities on issues related to radioactive waste management in the
oil & gas sector. This week the UAE signed an agreement with France
for the development of a nuclear power generating plant.
According to the FEA chief, the IAEA consultant will assist the
FEA's department for control and prevention in assessing natural
radioactive waste originated from the oil and gas industries. The scope
of work also includes classification of radioactive waste treatment,
review of relevant legislations and assessment of infrastructure for
radioactive waste management.
He announced that an IAEA technical team is scheduled to visit the
UAE this month to discuss arrangement for drafting the strategy.
''The proposed strategy comes in line with FEA's effort to enforce
is part of effort to enforce the federal law number one of 2002
regarding the regulation and control of the use of radiation sources
and protection against the hazards."
